He, along with two marked patrol cars, were responding with their lights and sirens activated on O'Neal Lane, in Baton Rouge, when a vehicle made a left turn in front of him at East Riverdale Avenue. Officer Foster's motorcycle struck the car and he was thrown approximately 80 feet. He was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The driver of the vehicle who turned in front of him was cited with failure to yield.

A resident of Denham Springs passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the age of 39 due to injuries suffered in the line of duty. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He obtained his Master 100 Gross Tons Captain's license from the LA Marine and Petroleum Institute and his Private Pilot Land and Sea license through the Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration. He worked as a Deputy with the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office and was a Volunteer Fire Fighter with Terrytown Fire Department. James and Julie moved to Denham Springs after Hurricane Katrina, and he has worked for the Denham Springs Police Department for over five years after being a Reserve Officer for one year. During his time with Denham Springs Police Department he was awarded Officer of the Year in 2010 and again in 2013. He was Sgt. at Arms with the Brotherhood of Valour Motorcycle Club. Visitation will be held at Abundant Life Church on Friday, January 2, 2015 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm. Visitation on Saturday will resume at 9:00am. Bishop J.W. Howell will conduct funeral services at 11:00am. Burial with police and military honors will be rendered at Denham Springs Memorial Cemetery. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Julie M. Foster, two children, Erica Lynn and Shawn Ellis Foster, his childhood best friend who was like a brother, Damond Bartlett, two brothers, Christopher Foster and wife Jennifer and David Foster and wife Nicole, sister, Debra Foster, mother and father-in-law, Janice and Luis Ferrera, brothers-in-law, Michael Leggett and wife Cristina and Ficho Ferrera, nieces and nephews, Emily Leggett, Benjamin Leggett ,Lynndia Foster, Jocelin Foster, Christopher Foster, Lauren Foster, Marshall Foster, Stephine Thompson, Ronald Thompson, Kaitlyn LeBlanc and Michael Melton. He was preceded in death by father, James E. Foster, Sr., and his beloved grandparents, Yvonne and Herbert Foucha. Pallbearers will be Sgt. Paul Steagall, Cpl. Clifton Brown, Cpl. Chad Dupuy, Officer Bailey Newsom representing Denham Springs Police Motor Division, Sr. Patrol Officer Damond Bartlett with Gretna PD and EBR EMS Paramedic George Steffensen.
