Naomi was born in Concho County on Sept. 30, 1909, to W.L. and Pearl Duke. She began school in Paint Rock and later attended Victory School where she met Rube Virden. They were married Jan. 13, 1924, in Abilene, lived and farmed near Winters and Ballinger, moving in April of 1931 to what is now known as Virden Hill. Naomi lived there 69 years. Naomi was a housewife, dairy farmer, sold Avon in the 1950s and '60s and taught kindergarten in the 1960s and '70s. She is best remembered for starting Senior Gatherings in 1963. She was the Senior Citizens Center director for 32 years, retiring on her 83rd birthday in 1992. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years; her parents; eight brothers; and four sisters. Survivors include her children, Herman Virden and wife, Beaunita, and Peggy Sharp and husband, Bobby, all of Ballinger, and Robert Virden and wife, Bonnie, of Christoval; nine grandchildren, Tony Virden and wife, Wanda, of Ballinger, Jackie Bomar and wife, Kathy, of Midland, Mitzi Crick and husband, Richard, of Memphis, Tenn., Shayne Bomar and wife, Pam, of Odessa, Robert Sharp and wife, Sharon, of Euless, Tammy Green of College Station, Mike Virden and wife, Sonja, and Lynn Virden and wife, Nichole, of San Angelo; six great-grandsons; 10 great-granddaughters; one great-great-granddaughter; and five great-great-grandsons. Also surviving is one sister, Hallie Robinson of Ballinger.
