He was born Oct. 30, 1911, in Quincy, a son of Henry and Helen Vogt Rees. He married Agnes L. Daily on Aug. 26, 1934, in St. Francis Catholic Church in Quincy. She preceded him in death.
His formal education included St. Francis Academy and Gem City Business College.
As a third generation owner of Rees Construction Co., he began his career at the age of 13, driving his father, Henry, to jobsites throughout the Midwest and Chicago suburbs.
Although officially retiring at the age of 72, he continued his daily routine in the office at Rees Construction until the age of 86, but his interest in viewing company projects prevailed until his death.
His interests included his family, gardening, playing cards, building the current Elks Club building and adding to its membership.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and also was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Rees was a former member of the Rotary Club and Spring Lake Country Club.
Fondly known as "Mr. Ed," he was a well-respected businessman and will be remembered by his family, friends and acquaintances for his gentleman's ways, sense of style and most of all, his humor.
He is survived by five children, Edward H. Ress and his wife, Darlene, of Kincaid, William H. Rees and his wife, Barb, of Fox Lake, Judith S. Thuer of West Chicago, Ronald J. Rees and his wife, Jeri, of Maywood, Mo., and David J. Rees and his wife, Jean, of Quincy; 22 grandchildren, Mark, Randy and James Rees, Dana Rives, Leslie Gallaher, Vicki Rees, Darcy Fitzsimmons, Marcus and Kelly Rees, Carla Sergenian, Curt, Kevin and Christopher Rees, Rebecca, Stephen, Susan, Robert and Elizabeth Thuer, Angela Rees, Rhonda Freeman, and Jennifer and Paul Rees; 32 great-grandchildren; his twin sister, Edythe Peacock of Quincy; and a special friend, Kay Dodds of Quincy. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, James Rees; three brothers, Frank, Carl and Walter Rees; and three sisters, Helen Gehring, Leota Kientzle and Berta Rees.
Services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. in St. Boniface Catholic Church by the Rev. Robert Jallas and the Rev. John Carberry. Entombment will be in Quincy Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home with a parish prayer service at 6 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus service to follow.
Memorials may be made to the Sunset Home Special Care Unit, Quincy Notre Dame and the Blessing Foundation for Hospice.
