The Decatur Daily Review [Decatur, Il.] Tuesday 21 January 1879. p. 1

Fatal Affray

Mt. Vernon, Ill. Jan. 19. --- Hiram Telford and George Hayes, young men who lived at Rome, this county, some thirteen miles from this place, got into a dispute at a country dance in that vicinity last night, and then they went out into the dark to fight it out. Hayes attacked Telford with a knife, cutting him in the abdomen and severing some intestines. Medical attention was immediately secured and all done that could be, but Telford died last night at 11 o'clock. Both young men stood well in the neighborhood, Telford being the son of Josiah Telford, a prominent and wealthy farmer. Hayes fled, but parties are in hot pursuit, and it is thought he will be captured.

The Daily Commonwealth [Topeka, Ks.] Thursday 6 May 1880. p. 2

Queer taste is exhibited by the family of Telford, who was murdered by Geo. W. Hays in Marion County, Ill, in 1879. Over his grave is a granite shaft surmounted by a large butcher knife, and on the stone is the inscription
