Marcellus enlisted in the Confederate Army at the age of 19 years. According to the book, Louisiana Confederate Soldiers and Confederate Commands, compiled in 1920 by Andrew B. Booth, he was a Private with Company D, 4th Louisiana Infantry. Marcellus enlisted on October 22, 1863, in Mobile, Alabama, when his youngest sister, Zoe Bellande, was just a few months old. Nine months later, he was captured near Atlanta, Georgia on August 5, 1864. He was sent to military prison in Camp Chase, Ohio, and remained there for nine months, being paroled May 2, 1865. He was exchanged for a Union prisoner and moved to New Orleans.
Marcellus married Rosina Ludwig (1839-1925), a German immigrant and the widow of Jean-Marie Begue (1814-1878), in October 1885, and resided at 822 Ninth Street, New Orleans. They had no children. Marcellus Bellande expired at New Orleans on June 2, 1905. His wife Rosina lived at NOLA until her demise on April 3, 1925.
Heidi Balje Good of Sugarland, Texas wrote the history of the Joseph H. Bellande family in 1989 for The History of Jackson County, Mississippi, which was the source of most of this material.
