YORKTOWN - Julia 'Anne' Flynn Shotwell, five months into her 100th year, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012.
Julia 'Anne' was born on March 7, 1913, to Fleetwood and Fannie Carter Flynn and lived on a small farm near Gilbert's Corner in Loudon County, Va. She had six siblings, Carol, Clarence, Paul, Charles, Frances Flynn and Elizabeth Smith.
Anne married Vernon Shotwell in 1937. Together they had two daughters,She was proud to be a great-great-grandmother She will be remembered by many nieces, nephews and special friends.
In her early teens her family moved to Washington, D.C., where she graduated from Western High School and attended Washington School for Secretaries. As a young woman, Anne was recognized by the Washington Herald -Times as a 'Washington Lovely' with 'smiling Irish eyes of blue.'
Anne loved to work. Her first job was at Nunnally's Candy Company, in Washington, D.C., and then, for more than 35 years, she devoted herself to the Marriott Corporation, as a Hot Shoppes dining room manager, in Washington D.C., Virginia, and Maryland. After that retirement Anne continued working at a Hallmark Card Shop in Roslyn, Va. In her tenth decade she repeatedly insisted 'I want a job !'
She was an active senior, and enjoyed Body Recall classes, travel, visiting family, cruises, the beach, church activities, especially the circle retreats to Blackstone and dinner meetings. For Anne, reading was a lifelong passion. She loved to be with children and her teddy bears.
Northern, Va., was 'home' for Anne, but in 1988 she moved to Yorktown to be near family. She became associated with St. Luke's UMC where she enjoyed working on the Easter Egg project. St. Luke's is where Anne met and developed a special friendship with Helen Barger and Ann Fink. Anne was a member of Grafton Christian Church and she cherished the Christian fellowship she shared with her church family.
Recently, Anne resided at Colonial Harbor and Mennowood Retirement Communities and most recently with her daughter, Marie and son-in-law, Dwaine.
Anne ( Granny, Aunt Anne, Mom,) loved to talk about her family, especially her five grand, seven great, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was especially fond of being outside in the warm sunshine and admiring the beauty of God's earthly world.
Her family wishes to thank Heartland Hospice for their support.
