Mary Edgerly Thornton, a descendant of a notable Scotch-Irish family, one of whom, Hon. Mathew Thornton, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence for the state of New Hampshire. She was born May 15, 1824, in the town of Thornton, New Hampshire, named for her grandfather,
its founder. She was the daughter of Nathan and Olive (Edgerly) Thornton and great-granddaughter of Captain Thomas Thornton, of Durham, who was a soldier in the revolution, and whose wife died at the advanced age of one hundred and four years, according to family records, at Lowell, Massachusetts. Her grandfather, George Edgerly, was a farmer of Rye, New Hampshire. George Washington and Mary E. McCracken have eight children,
seventeen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
