A lifelong Iowa County resident, he married Hannah Walstead in 1913 at Otter Creek. She died in 1956.
Mr. Mellum was a charter member of the Fairview Lutheran Church in rural Avoca and helped build the church.
Surviving are two sons, Marvin, Avoda; and Harold, Janesville; a daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Herbst, Miami Springs, Fla.; a brother, Nicholas, Mt. Horeb; a sister, Mrs. Celia Simonson, Dodgeville; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
