Gertrude P. Kassebaum, 97, of El Dorado died Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at Vintage Place. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in El Dorado. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening at Carlson Funeral Home. Internment will follow the funeral in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.
She was born Feb. 7, 1910 in Mannington, W. Va., the daughter of Joseph William and Lucy Ann (Beers) Flowers. She came to El Dorado in 1918 at the age of 8 from West Virginia. She graduated from Butler County Community College and attended Pittsburg College. Gertrude was a teach in the primary grades and a homemaker. While teaching, she taught at Midian for 2 1/2 years and then at Lincoln Elementary from 1936 to 1943. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Circles of the church, P.E.O. and Quest Club.
She was married to George Sluss Feb. 6, 1943, and he died Dec. 27, 1974. She later married Dr. Glen Edward Kassebaum on Dec. 17, 1982, and he also preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 1991.
Those she leaves includes: a son, Richard "Dick" Burch of Sylmar, Calif.; stepchildren, Kenneth Kassebaum of South Carolina and Nancy Johnson of Santa Maria, Calif.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a grandson; and a stepdaughter, Virginia Leake.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials for Butler Community College or the First United Methodist Church. These may be left with Carlson Funeral Home who are in charge of the arrangements. Condolences for the family may be sent to www.carlsoncolonial.com.
