Sadly this family experienced an epidemic of either Dysentery known as Bloody Flux, or Y vad velen known as yellow plague, or Y Frech Wen known passmall pox which was part of an epidemic outbreak noted across Britain and spread through Wales during that time. Ferndale is in the Rhondda Fach, the highest town in Rhondda Cynon Taf that sits on a ledge above the valley floor, surrounded by woods of the forest of Llyn y forwyn, the Maiden's Lake, and dominated by rocky escarpments isolating the area from the other settlements in the Rhondda.
