Rex Mace Stevens was born December 11, 1922 in Shoshone, Lincoln, Idaho.
His middle name 'Mace' was the maiden name of his paternal Grandmother, Marietta Mace Stevens (1849-1912). The son of Albert Stevens and Cecil May Lewis Stevens, Rex had 5 brothers and 1 'half' brother: Lewis A. "L.A." Stevens
George Marvin Stevens
Lloyd James Stevens
Jasper Cecil Stevens
Wesley Perry Stevens
John David Stevens

Rex grew up working on the family farm. He was baptized and confirmed a member of the Church on August 6, 1932. After graduating from Richfield High School, Rex joined the United States Navy Reserve. He had a steady girl-friend when he was sent overseas, but her picture, found among Mom's photos dated 1943, is marked only "Rex's Girl."
During WWII Rex became a crew member of the USS Runner (SS-275) Submarine, a Gato-class submarine built by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, and launched May 30, 1942. The Gato (Gato='catshark') submarines were usually named after sea creatures – this one after a fish found in subtropical waters, called a "runner" for its rapid leaps from the water.
January 10, 1943: USS Runner arrives at Pearl Harbor from the US east coast, by way of the Panama Canal.
January 18th: Departs Pearl Harbor to patrol in the Mariana Islands area and off the Palau's.
March 7th: USS Runner ends her 1st war patrol at Pearl Harbor, after torpedoing 5 Japanese ships; then receiving damage from a bomb dropped from a patrol bomber – it was a near miss but the concussion knocked out the sound gear and power supply for both periscope hoists – the Runner escaped with a deep dive and after her crew made some emergency repairs, returned to Pearl harbor for an overhaul.
April 1st: Departs Pearl Harbor to patrol in the South China Sea.
April 20th: The Runner lays mines off Pedro Blanco Rock near Hong Kong and torpedoes a Japanese freighter.
April 24th: USS Runner torpedoes and damages a Japanese ship south of Hong Kong.
May 6th: The Runner ends her 2nd war patrol at Midway.
May 27, 1943: 3rd War Patrol: USS Runner departs Midway to patrol off Hokkaido and the Kuril Islands.

She is never heard from again.

All of the Stevens Brothers, except George who died in 1937, served our country in the Armed Forces. Lewis joined the Army Air Corps; Lloyd, Jasper, Rex, & Wesley joined the Navy; all serving during WWII and Korea. Much younger, half-Brother John also served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict.

All returned home safe except Rex, who was lost at sea.

June 1943: 48º06'N, 153º15'E: Captured Japanese records indicated that the Runner sank the Japanese merchant cargo ship 'Seinan Maru' on June 11, 1943 off the north-west coast of Honshu, Japan and the Japanese army cargo ship 'Shinryu Maru' on June 24, 1943 off Matsuwa Island, Kuriles.

July 11, 1943: Declared the "Date of Loss" by the US Navy. The USS Runner is believed to have hit a mine in the North Pacific Ocean somewhere off Matsuwa Island, Kuriles.

U.S. World War II Navy Muster Rolls, 1938-1949 "Report of Changes": Name: Rex Mace Stevens, S2c; Ship, Station or Activity: Runner; Ship Number or Designation: SS-275; Muster Date: 1943; Missing in Action 7/11/43; Changed to Presumed Dead 1/2/46.

January 2, 1946: Added to the "Tablets of The Missing Memorial" at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific 'Punchbowl' Honolulu, Hawaii. The walls of the memorial are etched with names of those who were never recovered from battle. Engraved upon the Dedicatory Stone at the Honolulu Memorial is this inscription: "IN THESE GARDENS ARE RECORDED THE NAMES OF AMERICANS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY AND WHOSE EARTHLY RESTING PLACE IS KNOWN ONLY TO GOD"

Rex's grieving family placed a marker for him in the Richfield Cemetery near his family home.

Inscription: "Rex Mace Stevens, Dec. 11, 1922-Jan. 2, 1946, USS Runner"

Thank you, "Floral Lady", for adding this memorial.
