Ellen Mae Nuffer Youell, 90, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2014 at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg.
Ellen Mae was born May 22, 1924 in Goshen, Virginia to George Russell and Maude Carper Nuffer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Burdett Youell Sr., and a son, Robert Burdette Youell Jr. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Meeks and Dorothy Garland, and a brother, George Russell Nuffer.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William and Catherine Youell, five grandchildren, Jennifer (Scott) Dillard, Cheyenne (Jay) Burnham, Ryan, Shea, and Ross Youell, and two great-granddaughters, Leigha and Haiden Dillard.
She married Robert Burdett Youell on July 20, 1951. She and her husband, in association with her brother-in-law, John Youell, owned and operated the Youell Family Farm, a Virginia Century Farm, first established in 1873. There they raised two sons, Robert and William. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Youell continued operation of the farm.
Mrs. Youell was well known for her baking and cooking talents, and enjoyed sharing it with others. Well into her 80’s, she could be found at her stove cooking for her grandchildren who were coming to visit. Her grandchildren, who she adored, were especially fond of her treat of chicken and dumplings. Each Christmas was reprised with her coconut layer cake and custard, a true Southern tradition in the Youell household.
She was a strong proponent for education, helping her sister attend nursing school, and assuring both sons obtained their college degrees to lead successful careers. Never failing to learn new things, she obtained her driver’s license in her late 60’s. Ellen Mae also shared the lesson of appreciating simple pleasures, whether enjoying a fresh garden tomato, or watching birds feed at her window.
She was a lifetime member of the Craigsville Presbyterian Church where she actively served in the Women of the Church.
In 2000, she moved to Clifton Forge to share residence with her sister Dorothy until her sister’s death in 2011. She moved to VMRC in 2012, where she established a new set of friendships, including Dorothy Goshey, a truly special friend and neighbor. She continued to live semi-independently with the assistance of several special care providers including a special bonding with Sarah Brown, a JMU Nursing student. Over the past several months, her failing health resulted in several stays at the Sentara RMH Medical Center and eventual residence at the Oak Lea Complete Living Center. She was the recipient of an abundance of kind and attentive aid from many care givers at both facilities until her passing.
Graveside services will be held at the Craigsville Cemetery on Friday, December 19 at 2 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Olivia Haney and assisted by Pastor Joel Robinette. Friends and family will be received at the Youell Family Farm at the conclusion of the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund of the VMRC Foundation, 1501 Virginia Ave. Harrisonburg, VA 22802.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
