DEATH TAKES A.C. MATZEN

KENT CHIEF DEPUTY WAS OTTAWA NATIVE

Albert C. Matzen, 67, who served 25 years in the sheriff's department, died Tuesday in St. Mary's hospital. Mr. Matzen had not been in good health for some time, but had worked until 10 days ago.

Mr. Matzen of 523 Turner-av., NW, served as deputy under Sheriffs Charles Berry, William L. Smith, Fred Kelley and Hugh M. Blacklock. Under Sheriff Blacklock and former Sheriff Kelly he was a process server and the last seven years he had been chief deputy.

Born in Jamestown township, Ottawa county, Mr. Matzen come to Grand Rapids at the age of 20 and lived here since except for three years on an Ottawa county farm and two years in Holland. During interval when he was not on the sheriff's staff he was railroad policeman for the Pere Marquette Railway, now the Chesapeake & Ohio, bank guard and for a while was a private investigator.

Mr. Matzen was a charter member of Grand Rapids lodge No. 50, Loyal Order of Moose, of St. Mary's church, the Holy Name society and the Fraternal Order of Police.

Surviving are his wife, Mary; a daughter, Mrs. Ray E. Peters of Grand Rapids; four brothers, Joseph of Flint and John, Philip and Anthony of Grand Rapids; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary cemetery. The body is at Alt mortuary.
