Evelyn Lou Morony

February 06, 1910 - April 17, 2006

Birthplace: Sacramento, California

Resided In: Chico, California

Evelyn Lou Morony, 96, died in Chico on April 17, 2006.

Private burial will be in Chico Cemetery.

She was born February 6, 1910 in Sacramento to Victor and Lydia Hart. She attended school in Gerber, CA., from the first through eighth grades, and graduated from Red Bluff High School in 1926 as editor of the yearbook and class valedictorian. Her family returned to Sacramento and she attended Sacramento City College for two years, transferring to the University of California, Berkeley, where she graduated in 1930 with honors in Spanish. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Following her university education, Evelyn entered the Berkeley Baptist Divinity School (currently the American Baptist Seminary of the West) where she earned a Master of Arts degree in New Testament studies in 1933.

On March 23, 1935, she married Rev. Gregory S. Morony in Sacramento. For the next 45 years, they shared a ministry in American Baptist churches in Sacramento, Eureka, Selma and San Joaquin, California; in Bremerton, Washington; and during World War II, in Kodiak, Alaska.

Evelyn was always active in church life, teaching Sunday School, leading youth groups, directing drama presentations, participating in women's work, arranging social and recreational church gatherings. She was a camp counselor and a camp director for American Baptist summer camping programs in Washington State and in California. She served on the American Baptist Women's regional board in Northern California and provided leadership at the annual women's conference at Mt. Herman, CA.

In 1980, Evelyn and Gregory moved to Chico. They had developed slide shows from their U.S. and world travels which they showed to churches and local civic groups. Following her husband's death in 1984, Evelyn continued to present these shows to local groups. She also served meals at the Jesus Center, recorded cassette tapes for the blind, and volunteered at Chico Community Hospital where she was a member of the Executive Board. She served on the Board of Directors at her mobile home park.

She was very active at First Baptist Church, Chico. She was Church Historian, served on church committees and in leadership positions, and taught a Sunday morning Bible class for many years. As Social Concerns Committee chairperson at First Baptist, she led the church in collecting goods and materials for the Esplanade House when it first opened.

Evelyn's many interests included reading, writing, crossword puzzles, Scrabble, growing flowers, travel, and her family. She responded to the beauty in the natural world and drew strength and inspiration from it. She was a bright, adventurous, resourceful woman, positive and undaunted. She was always forward looking. Her faith, humor and wisdom carried her through a long, vital, and memorable life. She is remembered with gratitude and the knowledge that her influence lives on in many lives.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter and son-in-Iaw, Mary Lou and Gayle Reynolds of Chico; her sons and their wives, Dr. Michael and Louise Morony of Los Angeles, and Rev. Carroll and Janet Morony of Garden City, Kansas; six grandchildren and spouses, Karen Sele, Linda Garrison, and Marcia Reynolds, all of Portland, Oregon; Sean and Kelly Morony of Newbury Park, CA., Eric and Elizabeth Morony of Los Angeles, CA, and Joy (Morony) and Collin Freeman of Shawnee, KS; six great-grandchildren, Kyla and Sean Sele, Jaron and Stefan Garrison, all of Portland, OR; and Cade and Shane Morony of Newbury Park, CA. She is also survived by her brother-in-law and his wife, Judge Jean and Phyllis Morony of Chico; their daughters, husbands and grandsons, Sally and James Potts, and Wendy and Jack Fine and their sons, Andrew and Nicholas of San Diego; and by her great-niece, Linda Hart Osgood, of Modesto.
