Vernon Holmes Winstead was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He had enlisted in the Navy in 1937 and was discharged on December 1, 1941, less than a week before the attack on Pearl Harbor. He reenlisted in June 1942 and spent most of the war in the South Pacific.
