James Frank Cooper, a 1962 graduate of Mobridge High School and the husband of the former Elaine Amundson of Mobridge, lost his brief battle with cancer when he died suddenly on Sunday, April 9, 2006, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Sheridan, Wyo., at the age of 62.

He was born April 1, 1944, in Gettysburg to Clarence and Agnes Cooper. After graduating from MHS, he worked two years as an agent/operator for the Milwaukee Railroad in South Dakota, Minnesota and North Dakota. He moved to Rapid City and served on the Rapid City Police Force, but missed his work on the railroad.

Moving to Gillette, Wyo., to pursue his career with Burlington Northern Railroad in 1979, he worked as a fireman/locomotive engineer. In 1985 he became Road Foreman of Engines. As his career with the railroad progressed, he moved to Overland Park, Kan., and worked as the manager of Engineer Training.

Loving the job as a locomotive engineer, he gave up his management career and returned to his love of operating locomotives in Wyoming. Then he returned to Fort Worth, Texas, for four years. He returned to Sheridan in 1998 to be close to the mountains he loved so much.

On Jan. 14, 1999, Jim married Elaine Amundson-Hausman, daughter of Mobridge's early Shoe and Saddle Repair Shop operator, Harry Amundson. Jim took her from Minneapolis, where they were married, to Sheridan to make their home.

Jim was a member of BLET Local 624. "He was a thoughtful and giving man," his wife said. He enjoyed watching television and reading all kinds of books. He especially liked to watch animals, bears (his favorites), mules and donkeys, and the Discovery Channel of television.

"Jim loved buying and selling vehicles and any time he could, he would come up with a good reason to trade one in," Elaine said. "He especially loved his two dogs, his special little buddy, a Dachshund named Schnickelfritz, and his cocker spaniel named Buck.

Jim leaves his wife Elaine of Sheridan; his parents, Clarence and Agnes Cooper of Gillette; his two daughters, Lisa Torkelson and husband Jeff of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Tanya Engfer and husband John of Sheridan; one sister, Sandra Gilkey and husband Rich of Gillette; his one niece, Misti Gilkey of Omaha, Neb.; and two grandsons, Joseph R. Engfer of the U.S. Navy, Bremerton, Wash., and Jamie Engfer of Sheridan.
