Opal V Rowe Bellew Wenker
was born at Rockridge, near Bradshaw, McDowell County, West Virginia. She was the eldest child of George C and Roma Stella Ratliff Rowe.

Her father, George, was murdered when she was 16 years old. This was during the Great Depression, and her mother had mouths to feed so she remarried to a neighbor, Fred Powell. This relationship would not last and Stella finally filed for divorce. In the meantime, Opal had married Harold Bellew and they had 3 sons. Harold answered the call of duty and served during WWII, in which he was killed in action, in Belgium. Opal married a second time to Donzie L Craighead, in Ohio. This marriage ended quickly in divorce. She left her home in West Virginia, along with her mother and most of her younger siblings, and moved to Baltimore, MD. It was here she met her third husband, Howard Wenker, and where she loved and raised her family. Her brothers, Julies and Hubert, had their own families by this time and had stayed in Buchanan County, Virginia.
