Enlisted as a Corporal in Co. K, 102nd OVI, on 15 August 1862 at the age of 18. Watson was part of a detachment sent to relieve Ft. Henderson at Athens, AL, on 24 September 1864, which was under siege by rebel troops under the command of CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. As the detachment was fighting to reach the fort, the fort was surrendered. Forrest was then able to force the detachment to surrender as well. Most of the men captured, and likely Watson, were sent to Cahaba Prison. After being released, he died at Jefferson Barracks, near St. Louis, MO, on 7 April 1865.
