A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at West Chester, Chester County, June 8, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Baltimore, Maryland, July 26 as a private with Co. K, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania Infantry). He was killed in action during the Seven Days Campaign at the battle of Mechanicsville (aka Beaver Dam Creek), Virginia, when a cannon ball tore off his left leg at the hip.
He had three brothers in the army: Joseph W. (87th Pa), Frederick L. (165th Pa), and Emanuel J. (87th Pa) and was the nephew of Michael Crilly (87th Pa), all of whom are buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
