From the "Peru Republican", Peru, In., June 18, 1926:
"Sarah Ellen Doane, daughter of Jesse and Hannah E. Elliott, was born in Grant County, Indiana, August 26, 1853. Her youth was spent in Miami County where the family resided after a few years residence in Grant County. She united with the M.E. church early in life, which relationship continued until her departure.
On June 2, 1888 she was united in marrriage with Harry C. Doane of Mentone, Indiana, which union was continued until September 16, 1895, when the messenger of death summoned the husband to the eternal world. Since the departure of her companion the years have been spent in widowhood, but with a degree of industry and economy that is equaled by few, maintaining the home and caring for the son of her husband who was then but a child, but who has in his mature years exercised great care in providing for her comfort.
In the early morning of May 25, 1926, her spirit suddenly took its flight from the beautiful home in Lorain, Ohio, where she with Conde has sojurned for the last twenty years.
Besides the son, Conde, there survive to mourn their loss, two sisters and one brother: Mrs. A.L. Davis of Denver, Indiana, Mrs. Julia Kile of Peru, Indiana, and Rev. Charles M. Elliott of Jonesboro together with many more distant relatives and friends.
The funeral service was conducted at the M.E. church at Gilead by the pastor, Rev. Longenbaugh."
