He was a native of Washington Co. and a son of the late George William and Mary Elizabeth Vaughn Oxendine.
Winston was a Gunnery Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served for 25 years including three tours in Vietnam and his last tour of duty came in 1983 in Beirut, Lebanon.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Purple Heart Organization and the Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Oxendine also worked as a probation officer. He was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Wayne, Jerry and Rocky Oxendine; a sister, Kathy Jo Oxendine.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Brenda Hammitt Oxendine, Johnson City; two sons, Winston Eugene Oxendine Jr. and wife, Julia, and John Oxendine and wife, Michele, all of Johnson City; four grandchildren, Gabe, Lukas, Logan and Madison Oxendine; two sisters, Patsy Lee and husband, Gary, and Lynn Farrell, all of Kissimmee, FL; one brother, Richard Oxendine, Elizabethton; many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Monday, October 20, 2014, at 7:00 PM in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Pastor Winston Oxendine Jr. and Pastor Steve Harmon officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM in the East Parlor prior to the service. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
The graveside service with military honors will be conducted Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at 11:30 AM at Mountain Home National Cemetery.
