LUCILLE K. BALSON

Lucille K. Balson, 94, formerly of 101 Western Ave., Fond du Lac, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home.

She was born a daughter of Bert G. and Esther L. Manthey Bushee on Nov. 17, 1908, in Fennville, Mich. She was a 1926 graduate of North Fond du Lac High School and attended Fountain Business School for two years.

On Aug. 28, 1928, she married Francis A. Altman in Fond du Lac. He preceded her in death on Jan. 3, 1958. On Nov. 1, 1969, she married J. William Balson in Fond du Lac. He preceded her in death on March 15, 1986.

Lucille worked for Sears Roebuck Company from 1942 until retiring in 1971.

She was a charter member of Memorial Baptist Church, where she served as church historian, Sunday School teacher and was a member of the church choir. Lucille was a board member and membership chairman for the Fond du Lac Historical Society. She was also a member of the American Association for Retired Persons and served on its board. Her hobby of genealogy began in 1953 and she was a member of the Fond du Lac County Genealogy Society. She also was the director of "Happy Seniors Chorus" for a number of years.

Lucille is survived by a daughter-in-law, Elaine Altman, New Berlin; five grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Eleanor (Robert) Neibauer, Wisconsin Rapids; three sisters-in-law, Marie Kropp, Fond du Lac, Marge LaLauzerne, Fond du Lac, Betty Bushee, Fond du Lac; a brother-in-law, James Balson, Hendersonville, N.C.; and many Altman and Balson nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; two sons, James Altman, Leroy Altman; a stepson, Thomas Balson; two brothers, Sec. Lt. James Bushee, Lt. Col. Richard Bushee, two sisters, Frances Graske and Enid Althen.

Services: The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Memorial Baptist Church, 645 Forest Ave., Fond du Lac, with the Rev. Brian Hastings officiating. Burial will be in Estabrooks Cemetery.

Visitation: The visitation will be from 1 p.m. Saturday until the time of service at church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Memorial Baptist Church.
