Mrs. Wilma Barnhardt Smith 98, of Cullowhee and Mocksville died December 7, 2014 at Mountain Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation. She lived a joyful life.

The Family requests memorials be considered for the Building Fund of Fork Baptist Church: Fork Baptist Church, 3140 US Highway 64 East, Mocksville, N.C. 27028; or the Building Fund of Cullowhee Baptist Church: Cullowhee Baptist Church, PO Box 37, Cullowhee, N.C. 28723.

Mrs. Smith was born in Davie County, June 23, 1916 to the late J.C. and Bessie Hendrix Barnhardt. She was retired from Davie County Hospital where she was a nursing assistant for fifteen years. She was a member of Fork Baptist Church, and was very active in all of the church activities. She was church Librarian for many years, and helped children and young people in Mission Work and Training Union. She loved to grow beautiful flowers and share them with everyone. Her greatest joy in life was loving and caring for her family, and helping others.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph L. Smith, on September 26, 1987, by a daughter, Martha Joan Smith, at age seven weeks on March 1, 1938 and by a son, Donald E. Smith, on April 1, 2006; five sisters, Geneva (Gray) Sheets; Annie (Lester) Foster; Mabel (Richard) Allen; Marie (Clyde) Jones; Pauline (Clarence) Carter; two brothers, Charlie Barnhardt; James Barnhardt; a sister-in-law, Kemp Barnhardt. Members of her husband's family include: sisters-in-law; Ella Gray (Gilmer) Brewer; Mattie Sue (T.A.) Blackwelder; Peggy Vogler, and brothers-in- law, Fred Smith; Aubrey Merrell; Bud Blackwelder; and Zollie Anderson.

She is survived by four daughters; Edith Ann (Derry) Norman of Staunton, Virginia; Elaine (Larry) Russell of Swansboro, North Carolina; Jane (David) Hall of Cullowhee, North Carolina; and Joetta (Ken) Lienau-Wood of Melbourne, Florida; daughter-in-law; Sandra Smith of Mocksville, North Carolina; fifteen grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Kathleen Barnhardt. Her husband's family includes: sisters-in law; Mary Merrell; Louise Blackwelder; Louise Smith; and brother-in-law; Gene Vogler.

While her Soul has gone to Jesus, she has given her Body to Bowman-Gray School of Medicine for Medical Research, so others may live.
