Eleanor "Nellie" Philpott was born about 1771 at Prince George's County, Maryland, to Barton Philpott and Martha Musgrove. She grew up in Frederick County, Maryland, and married John Alexander Hamilton there on 22 June 1795 (license). They made their home at Jefferson County, Virginia (now West Virginia) where John died, between 1817 and 1820. Eleanor eventually moved to Morgan County, Virginia (now West Virginia), then to Darke County, Ohio with several of her children.
