He was the son of Olive M. (Chitwood) and Arthur Lee Powell, the last born and the last to survive of their seven children. He was a direct descendent of Thomas Powell, early settler of Virginia, of John Seley, veteran of the Revolutionary War, and was a grandson of Amos Chitwood and James Powell, Civil War veterans.
He grew up in Kansas and was educated in Kansas schools, graduating from Emporia State Teachers College in 1942. He had previously enlisted and was inducted into the U.S. Army Corps Class of 43-K, December 5, 1943. He won his wings and married his college sweetheart, the former Mary Ahrens.
Returning to civilian life, he flew both overseas and domestic airlines. Later as a charter, then a business pilot, he retired from Baylor University in 1986 as an executive pilot.
Memberships included Central Christian Church and the Friendship, Class, Senior Kiwanis, Baylor Retirees, Horseless Carriage Club, The Class of 43-K and the Monday Morning Old Duffers Coffee Club.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary of Waco; son and daughter-in-law, Don and Terry Powell of Arlington; daughter, Janet Adams of Lake Dallas; grandchildren, Adam and Diane Powell of Arlington, Shelley Kennedy of Denton, Sarah Adams of Lake Dallas, and several nieces and nephews.
