Obituary

Alice Lucille (Peggy) Maxwell Arnold, 84, died September 9, 2001 at the Davis County Hospital, Bloomfield, IA. She was born May 5, 1917 near Mitchell, SD to Conard R. and Ruth Hubbard Maxwell.

She attended a Davison County rural school, graduated from Mitchell High School and South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD in 1940 with a degree in Printing and Journalism. After graduation she worked in the journalism departments at both South Dakota State and Iowa State Universities.

She was married to Ensign Verle Arnold of Milton, IA, December 2, 1942 by Navy Chaplain C. Leslie Glenn at Riverside Church, New York City. After WWII they lived in Atlantic, Council Bluffs and Bloomfield, IA.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, a Sunday school teacher, MYF counselor, past president of the United Methodist Women having a lifetime membership pin, member and past president of the Davis County Hospital Auxiliary, co-organizer and co-leader of the first Bloomfield girls 4-H club, the Clever Cloverettes. She was both a Girl and Cub Scout leader and received the Boy Scout Silver Beaver Award. She also was a past Rotary Ann and is a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. She was a member of Chapter B, P.E.O. and the Chautauqua Club.

Mrs. Arnold taught school for 10 years in the Davis County Community School system. She was a member of the Davis County Retired School Personnel.

Her hobbies were flowers, traveling and genealogy. She researched, compiled and published her Hubbard and Maxwell family histories and genealogy.

She is survived by her husband, three sons, John and Judy of Centerville, Gene and Julie of Waukee, and Dr. Jeffrey and Jan of Flint, MI., and daughter, Jacque and Jerry Pirtle of Moberly, MO, twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Kenneth Maxwell of Brooklyn Park, MN and John Maxwell of Destin, FL.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 12 at 1:30 p.m. Wagler 's Funeral Home, Bloomfield, IA. Open visitation will be Tuesday, September 11, P.E.O. services at 6:30 p.m. with the family present after until 8 p.m.

Burial will be in Millers Chapel Cemetery, Van Buren County. Pallbearers will be grandchildren.

Music for the service will be by Jill Arnold, granddaughter, accompanied by Dr. Jeff Arnold.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, are to the Bloomfield United Methodist Church and the Bloomfield Chapter B, P.E.O. Education Fund.
