From The Mound City News-Jeffersonian, January 4, 1918, Page 1:

"Eliza Jane Mendenhall was born at Graham, Missouri, September 18, 1862 and died at Mound City, December 30, 1917, aged 55 years, three months and 12 days. October 2, 1881, she was married to A.J. VanDeventer, who survives her. Immediately after marriage they removed to York county, Nebraska, where they lived for eight years, coming to Mound City, in 1890.

Deceased was the mother of nine children, three of whom died in childhood. The living children are Thos. W., Ray, Dora, and Ralph of Mound City, and Mrs. Edna Taylor, of Falls City, Neb., and Mrs. Jessie Clemmens, of Wetmore, Kans. Besides her immediate family, she leaves four brothers, and three sisters, all of Lincoln, Nebr. She also leaves eight grandchildren.

While in Nebraska she united with the Christian Church and on coming to Mound City became a member of the Methodist Church.

Mrs. VanDeventer was preeminently a homemaker. She cared but little for society. Her life was in her home and her greatest joy was in the happiness of her family. That sort of mother is most sorely missed and life will never be the same again in this household."
