UDALL — Lois Carol Satterthwaite, 88, of Udall, died Dec. 3, 2014, at her home.

Services are planned for 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at the Udall Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

Memorials are to the Udall Methodist Church or to the Udall Community Historical Society.

Lois was born Nov. 21, 1926, to William S. and Edna (Huff) Grant at their farm near Udall. Lois was raised in Udall and graduated from Udall High School in 1944. One week later, she entered St. Mary’s Hospital in Winfield under the United States Cadet Corps from which she graduated in 1947 as a registered nurse.

Lois married Fred Satterthwaite in 1947 at El Dorado after Fred’s return from military duty.

Lois worked for St. Mary’s Hospital and William Newton Memorial Hospital. As a registered nurse, she was chosen to be the school nurse for USD 465 in 1962. Lois remained at USD 465 as the school nurse for 23 years. She graduated from Southwestern College with a bachelor of science degree in nursing in 1978.

Lois was active in many organizations throughout her professional life. She was honored by Business and Professional Woman as Woman of the Year in 1978. Lois was elected as president of the Kansas School Nurses in 1980. Most recently, she was honored as a 20-year member of the Udall Community Historical Society.

A lot of you know Lois from the Winfield public schools and some of you know her as Mrs. Sheriff after Fred became the sheriff of Cowley County.

In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Greg Elliott and Melissa (Elliott) Crabtree.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Satterthwaite, Udall; children, Sherry Elliott and husband Lonny, Colorado Springs, Colo., Paul Satterthwaite, Udall, and Bruce Satterthwaite, Winfield; grandchildren, Lisa Borgen, Colorado Springs, Tyler Satterthwaite and Taylor Satterthwaite, both of Winfield, and Abby Satterthwaite, Shreveport, La.; and great-grandchildren, Joshua and Ryan Borgen and Clayton and Nathan Crabtree. Her family also includes Donna Phillips, Shreveport, La., Emily Davis, Parker Davis and Alyssa Handlin, Winfield.
