Steptoe Blackwell possessed a pre-1825 land grant in Washington Parish, Louisiana on the Pushepatapa Creek that his brother, Thornton's family, inherited from him. Steptoe Blackwell had become a successful merchant in New Orleans. He never married and left his inheritance to his sisters and sisters-in-law. In his will he also liberated his slave, Nancy, leaving her an inheritance to care for her family.

On Dec. 31, 1836 the Executor of Steptoe Blackwell's will paid cash to H. Blakley for a marble tombstone in the sum of twenty dollars.
