Billie McCauley

Billie McCauley, of Galveston, was born June 14, 1929 in Denton, Texas and passed away at John Sealy Hospital on October 26, 2014. She worked as a Nursing Supervisor at UTMB for more than 20 years, retiring in 1996. Billie extended the nurse’s qualities of intelligence, know-how and compassionate realism along a wide range. She was committed to Rosenberg Library and to many humanitarian organizations.

For three decades a major supporter of Educational Theatre and Performing Arts at Ball High, she was known to many talented students as “Grandmama Drama.” She developed her skill as artist at Galveston College, producing striking acrylic paintings. Long a key member of the island’s Poets Roundtable, she became host of monthly working sessions that began with a home-cooked Southern-style dinner. A poem of Billie’s always ended the evening’s series of presentations and critiques.
Billie was a matriarch and storyteller in the classic Texas tradition. Her sense of place and of people was vivid. Her wit had edge. Her spirit of friendliness made everyone welcome.

She is survived by daughter Molly Vernon, son-in-law
Scott Vernon, grandsons August and Austin Vernon, granddaughter-in-law Sarah Vernon, great-grandchildren Drew, Parker, and Ava Vernon and nephews Mike and Tim McKinney.

A celebration of her life will be held at 3228 Avenue P1/2, 2:00-5:00, Sunday, November 2. All friends and family are invited to attend.

The family requests that donations be made to Rosenberg Library in lieu of flowers.
