Donald L. Brotherwood, 85, of 922 Hendricks Avenue, St. Marys, Ohio died at 4:23 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at his residence. He was born May 26, 1929 in Van Wert, Ohio to John and Ada Brotherwood. On April 4, 1953 in Portland, Indiana he married Mary Ann Boltz, who preceded him in death May 12, 2014.

Donald is survived by his children: Donald (Nancy) Brotherwood of St. Marys, Ohio, Dean (Ann) Brotherwood of St. Marys, Ohio, Elizabeth (Mark) Hemmert of Botkins, Ohio, Amy (Glenn) Norman of St. Marys, Ohio, Steven (Teresa) Brotherwood of St. Marys, Ohio, and Susan (Donald) Henline of St. Marys, Ohio. He has 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Grace Ball of St. Marys, Ohio.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Ada Brotherwood, a brother, Albert “Smokey” Brotherwood, a sister Caroline Lunz, and a sister, Sharon Sloan.

Donald retired in 1991 from Avco/White New Idea Farm Equipment Corp. in Coldwater, Ohio where he was employed for 28 years. He entered the Army on January 4, 1951 and was a member of the 24th Infantry Division, 19th Infantry Regiment, Company L, where he served in the Korean War. He was separated from military service on October 3, 1952, and served 4 years inactive reserve status before being discharged with the rank of Sergeant. During his time of service he was awarded the Combat Infantrymen badge, Army Good Conduct medal with the Japan clasp, National Defense medal, Korean Service medal with three bronze stars, United Nations medal for Korea, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and the Korean Defense Service medal. Recently, in June of 2014 he received the Ambassador of Peace medal at a ceremony held at the Korean Veteran War Memorial in Dayton, Ohio. Donald was proud to have served his country.

Donald’s favorite pastimes were taking care of his late wife’s dog, Sissy, who provided him companionship after her passing. He also enjoyed woodworking, auto racing and watching Cincinnati Reds baseball games. He enjoyed his visits with his Army buddies. He co-owned a small engine repair business and continued helping repair small engines throughout his life. In his younger years he enjoyed racing go-carts as a hobby with his dad and brother. Donald will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family.

Rites are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 8, 2014 at Miller-Long & Folk Funeral Home (314 West High Street Chapel) in St. Marys. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at the funeral home on High Street. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Auglaize County Humane Society.
