Dad was born to wylie and annie mangrum of fairview tennessee in 1927. He had one brother, alton mangrum, and two sisters- allene rose and lucille ?. He was married to lillian jewell mangrum (daughter of james mays and naomi mays green). They had six children: william victor mangrum born 1950, janice faye mangrum medlin nutter born 1952; richard allen mangrum born 1954; mark woodson mangrum born 1959; steven randall mangrum born 1961; and james michael mangrum born 1966. They lived in nashville until 1965 when virgil built a house next to his father in fairview, Tennessee. Virgil died in a car accident on January 2, 1971. He was a sheet metal worker. In the late 1940s and into 1950 he served in the u.s. navy with the "fighting ceebees". He received a "discharge other than honorable" for going awol to visit his wife who was pregnant with their first child.
