Daughter of Henry Hatton, a labourer, later a wood dealer, and Mary (nee Buckle). Caroline was baptised at St Paul's, Bedford, Bedfordshire, England, on 30 October 1859. She had a very tragic start to her life. She was Henry and Mary's fifth child, and by the time she was born, her three older brothers, James, Joseph and another James, and her older sister, Elizabeth had already died. The first James was 3 years and 6 months old, Joseph was 12 weeks old, Elizabeth only lived for 9 weeks and the second James for only 13 weeks. Caroline was born in 1859, then her younger siblings, William, twins Alice and Sophia, and John all died in infancy or early childhood. Of the nine children, Caroline was the only one to reach the age of 4. Her father died in January 1888, followed the following month by her mother.

Caroline probably felt she had little left to remain in England for, and soon after her parents died, she emigrated to Canada. She married John Springate, a boiler maker, in Hamilton, Ontario, on 20 October 1892. Caroline died at the age of 78.
