Viola A. Flaagan, age 96, of McVille, ND, formerly of rural Pekin, ND died Sunday, November 16, 2014 at Nelson County Health System - Care Center in McVille.
Viola was born October 15, 1918 near Pekin, ND the daughter of Adolph and Bella (Ensrud) Anderson. She grew up in the Pekin area and graduated from Pekin High School. She attended school in Mayville, ND where she graduated with her teaching certificate. She taught rural school, and during World War II she moved to Minneapolis, MN to do factory work for the war effort. Viola moved back to the Pekin area and married Benhard Flaagan in Devils Lake, ND on December 18, 1948. The couple farmed for many years near Pekin until they moved to Lakota, ND in 2007. Benhard died February 26, 2008. After his death, Viola moved to the care center in McVille.
Viola was a life long member of Sigdal Lutheran Church, rural Tolna, ND. She was active in the Ladies Aid and the Pekin and Tolna Senior Citizens. She enjoyed playing bingo and canning. She took many bus trips with Benhard and loved to stay close with siblings and family. Viola never met a stranger. She enjoyed meeting, and getting to know, new people.
Viola is survived by her son Duane (Becky) Flaagan of rural Pekin, ND; daughter Laurel (Gary) Petrone of Hillsboro, IL; grandson Alex of St. Louis, MO; sisters-in-law Amie Aaser of Detroit Lakes, MN and Connie Flaagan of Fargo, ND; and many nieces and nephews.
Viola was preceded in death by her parents; husband Benhard; son Bennett; brother Raleigh Anderson; and sisters Agnes Blankenship, Lila Hermanson, and Aleda Snortland.
Funeral Services will be Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Sigdal Lutheran Church, rural Tolna, ND. Visitation will be an hour prior to services in the church. Interment will be in Sigdal Lutheran Cemetery, rural Tolna, ND.
