Henry S. Jacobus was born in 1878 in Montville, New Jersey (New Jersey birth index) and was the son of Marsden Jacobus (Feb 23, 1837-Mar 30, 1905) and Susan E Van Ness Jacobus (Aug 4, 1844-April 23, 1917). Henry had five siblings: Bertha Jacobus (1870), Maria Jacobus (1871), Lizzie Jacobus (1873), Abram A. Jacobus (June 13, 1875-Nov 11, 1895) and Wilbur M. Jacobus (1883).
According to New Jersey census records Henry was divorced at some time in his life after his wife's unfaithfulness. The family story goes that he became a "hermit" after being betrayed by his wife and took to alcohol.
Subsequently he erected a small, modest cottage for himself on the mountain overlooking Towaco. Henry was a farmer for most of his life and considered a good man with a team. He was fond of his nephew Russell and often asked "When the h..l is Russ coming to visit me?" His nephew would tell of plowing the fields with "Uncle Hen" and after each row he would procure a bottle from a tree and say "Kid, this is my cough medicine."
Henry lived until at least 1935. It is assumed that he is buried in the Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery in Montville, New Jersey with the rest of his relatives but his name does not appear on their listings.
