He was a cigar maker and practiced his trade before joining the Springfield Fire Department. He was a member of the Alert Fire Company which used an old hand tub to do valiant work in protecting the city of Springfield. Mr. Knapp was the foremen of this company in 1876 when he was appointed to Hose Company 3. He served with this company until 1888 when he was transferred to Hook & Ladder 1. Three years later he became driver of Hose 3 a position he held until December 1908 when he was transferred to Engine Co. 1. On June 25,1909 Fireman Knapp was riding on the rear step of Hose 3 with Fireman Robert J. Miller en route to an alarm. At the corner of Lyman and Main Streets. The guard rail for the trolley tracks caught the wheel of the hose wagon causing the two firemen to be thrown from the wagon. Fireman Knapp was thrown landing on his head directly in front of a trolley car. He was removed to Mercy Hospital where he died of a skull fracture.
