Martin R. Bertrand, 75, of Jefferson died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital, surrounded by his loved ones.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson, with the Rev. David Roehrich officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Martin was born Sept. 16, 1927, the son of Henry and Amanda (Chicoine) Bertrand. He was a lifelong resident of the Jefferson area. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1946.

He married Joyce Rosenbaum in June 1946 in Jefferson. She died in November 1951. Martin farmed the family farm for many years. Farming was one of the great loves of his life. He still lived on the family farm at the time of his death.

He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. Martin served on the Jefferson Township Board for 25 years and also served on the board of the Farmers Elevator.

Survivors include his special friend and companion, Joann Simons of Jefferson; a son, Phil and his wife, Scherry Bertrand, of Jefferson; a daughter, Martha Yates of Sioux City; eight grandchildren, Brad, Bryan, Tiffany and Nicolas Bertrand, Jeff and Jamie Ryan, Amanda Mahoney and Dan Scott; 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elliane Bertrand and Bonita Schmitz, both of Elk Point, S.D., and Lorraine Montagne of Sioux City; and 34 nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Genevieve LaFleurer; four brothers, Andrew Bertrand, Lee Bertrand and twins, Hubert and Norbert Bertrand; and a great-grandson, Christopher Dowd.
