Johanna G. "Jo" Sexton, 87, of Shelbyville, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Major Hospital.

Born Sept. 5, 1915, in Coplay, Penn., she was the daughter of Frank Keppel and Johanna (Haftle) Keppel Gilly. She married Donald H. Sexton on June 20, 1943, and he preceded her in death on April 26, 1995.

Survivors include two sons, Pete Sexton of Shelbyville and Donald Leroy Sexton of Columbia City; two sisters, Mrs. Pierre (Theresa) Guinvarch of Fort Myers, Fla., and Mrs. James (Pauline) Rinker of Henderson, Nev.; three grandchildren, Roy Edward Sexton, Christopher David Sexton and Jennifer Sexton; and three great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Dale Roger Sexton.

Mrs. Sexton had been employed as a secretary in the personnel division of the U.S. Navy Department, in Washington, D.C., during World War II. She also was Shelby County Deputy Treasurer, and was employed at the former Melton's Jewelry Store and Shelby National Bank.

She was a member of Major Hospital Guild, Vestavia and First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member for more than 50 years and served as elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, past president of Presbyterian Women's Association and Afternoon Circle leader.

She was secretary for Shelby Senior Citizens and past president of Walkerville Elementary School PTA, Coulston Elementary School PTO, Psi Xi Sorority, Town and Country Extension Homemaker Club and Shelby County Diligent Diggers Garden Club. She was a volunteer for American Red Cross for 18 years.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Carmony-Ewing Broadway Street Funeral Home, 232 W. Broadway St.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Gary W. Huffman officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
