Ida “Ruth” (Granger) Higgs of Cassville passed away Tuesday, November 25, 2014. Ruth was born February 20, 1912, on a farm near Simco, MO to Josie (Gailey) Granger and John Sanford Granger. Most of Ruth’s schooling was in Rocky Comfort, MO, but the family moved to Joplin during her senior year and she graduated from Joplin High School. She attended Northeastern State Teacher’s College in Tahlequah, OK and taught school in Rocky Comfort. She also worked at Christmans’ (Macy’s) Department Store in Joplin for 34 years.

On July 1, 1946, she married Larry “Red” Miller and they resided in Monett, MO. They enjoyed fishing and watching all sports together – local and national - especially football. She was active in Monett’s civic affairs – assisted in taking the 1950 census, was a clerk in all the elections and was treasurer of Larry’s Railroad Engineer’s Union. Upon Larry’s death, she returned to Business College in Joplin and then she met another red head, Chester “Buck” Higgs. They were married June 2, 1962, and together they ran a cattle farm near Wheaton, MO. Ruth enjoyed being around people and because of that she accepted a job at Fanning’s Department Store in Cassville and stayed on when it became Smith’s Department Store. Her sense of humor and friendliness made her dear to not only the owners and staff but also to each customer she assisted. Ruth and Buck were active members of the new Hope Baptist Church near Wheaton and because of her love of music, she was the church pianist for decades. She served as election clerk for many elections, was a member of the Wheaton Senior Citizens and assisted in the 1970 census in that area. Ruth often traveled with family and was privileged to experience Colorado and Disney Land as well as explore Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand.

She was preceded in death by her father; mother; two brothers, Hubert and Virgil; her husband, Buck, as well as her stepson, Joe Higgs, who she loved like her own son. She is survived by a sister, Ruby Mills and her husband, Con; a step daughter-in-law, Jackie Higgs; a step daughter, Betty Lamberson; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; as well as five nephews and nieces, that Ruth loved as if they were her own children.

Visitation is at 10:00 A.M. Friday, November 28, 2014, in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville followed by services at 11:00 A.M. Pastors Charles Stults and Virgil Beck will conduct the services. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Exeter, Missouri.

Contributions may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, 14284 Farm Road 1050, Exeter, MO 65647, Peachwood Manor Home, 15895 State Highway 76, Cassville, MO 65625 or Hospice, 845 Highway 60, Suite A, Monett, MO 65708.
