Jesse William Hedges, was the fifth of seven children of Stephen & Elizabeth "Betsey" Randall Hedges. Jesse married Mary "Polly" Calkins in 1821 in Clinton Co., and they became the parents of John Randall, Stephen Jeremiah, Elisha, William, Lafayette and Mary Hedges. Jesse's parents settled in Champlain and Chazy, Clinton Co., NY. When Jesse's father Stephen died in 1813, Jesse was just 13 and his mother still had young children at home living in the Chazy area of Clinton Co., NY. It is not known where his mother died but probably in Clinton Co,. NY. Before 1830 Jesse & his wife and other Hedges and Calkins families had settled in Erie Co., NY.
Most of Jesse's children remained in the Erie Co., area but his son Elisha who married Fidelia Hicks moved west to Minnesota, Dakota Ter., and finally spent the remainder of their years in the North Dakota-Montana area.
