Found in The State 11 October 1968: William Bennett Austin Sr., 73, of 3915 Devine St., a retired salesman, died Thursday at the Columbia Hospital. He was a native of North Carolina but had lived in Columbia for 40 years where he was a member of the Shandon Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Alice Timmons Austin and one son, William B. Austin Jr. of Columbia.

His place of birth comes from his WWI Draft Registration Card where he lists his employer as his father.

He can be found on the 1900 US Census for Big Lick, Stanly, North Carolina at age 5 enumerated as Bennett Wm, DOB given as Jul 1894, living with Jacob Archelaus Austin, 28, Julia, 24, Hettie, 7, Hessie, 3, Tommie, 2, and Claudine, 1. He was born in NC.
