Alvin L. Beck Dies Sunday in Florida
Hold Rites Here Next Monday for Retired Hardware Merchant
Word was received Sunday of the death earlier that day of Alvin L. Beck at Orlando, Fla., where he and Mrs. Beck had gone in December to spend the winter. He as 71 last Dec. 20.
In the hardware business here 51 years, he retired early last year because of ill health.
Services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Waite funeral home in charge of Rev. R. Kenneth Smelser. Burial will be in Spring Grove cemetery.
He leaves a wife, Lena; two sons, Glenn of Boston, Mass., and Dr. Russell Beck of Toledo; five grandchildren; a brother, Will F., and a sister, Mrs. Lovina Rothacre, both of Medina.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon Friday until time for the services. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the cancer fund.
Born in Blake in Guilford township, he and his parents moved to Medina when the father, Frederick Beck, became county recorder in 1900.
He worked at the Oatman Bros. hardware for 17 yeas before he and Arthur W. Oatman started their own hardware business, Oatman & Beck. Seven years later Mr. Oatman retired, Will F. Beck joining his brother in the new firm, Beck Bros. hardware, 27 years ago.
Will Beck purchased his brother's interest in the store last November.
Mr. Beck for many years was superintendent of the First Baptist church Sunday school and through the years has been active in the guidance of the Boy Scout program in Medina. He was a member of the old Businessmen's association and more recently the Chamber of Commerce.
