James H. Carpenter served as Vice-President and General Manager of Colgate-Palmolive Philippines, Inc. During World War II and the three year Japanese occupation he was interned as a civilian prisoner in Santo Tomas and later in the Los Bailos camp.

After liberation he took a leading role in the establishment of Colgate-Palmolive in the Philippines in 1949 and in the erection of its new plant at Makati, Rizal.

He married Ruby Stephens and had one son born in the Philippines in 1948. The family remained in Manila until 1953 when the company transferred James to Havana and later to Paris in 1957 and Toronto in 1959 when he was named president and general manager of Colgate-Palmolive Canada.
