The Rappahannock Times, Tappahannock, VA, Thurs. 9 Jul 1936:
Charles Ivan Mothershead succumbs to heart attack early Sunday. C.I. Mothershead, well known merchant and farmer at Return, Caroline County, died Sunday morning, July 5, at 8:20 o'clock, following a heart attack. Mr. Mothershead was born in Westmoreland County, December 23, 1872, making his age at death 63 years, 6 months and 12 days. He came to Caroline County many years ago and conducted a store at Return and in connection therewith operated a farm. In late years he has been much interested in the development of lespedeza as a legume crop which he believed and demonstrated was well adapted to the climate and soil of this section. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at Enon Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Mr. Mothershead is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alice Coates Mothershead, and by three children, Miss Evelyn Mothershead, Mrs. Louise Gookins and Charles Ivan Mothershead, Jr.
