CANBY — Memorial services for James "Jim" Winters, 56, of Canby will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby. Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery with military honors provided by the Clark Hanson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 117 of Canby and the Gary American Legion Post 109 of Gary, S.D.
Mr. Winters died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia.
James Louis Winters was born Sept. 26, 1941, in Canby, to Louis and Clara (Engel) Winters. He was baptized and confirmed at Zaccheus Lutheran Church in Canby and attended Canby High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961-1963 during the Berlin Conflict. On Dec. 27, 1972, he and Lavonne Kelly were married in Olivia. He spent his life farming north of Canby. He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby where he served as trustee. He also was a member of the Canby Jaycees, Clark Hanson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 117, Gary American Legion Post 109 and 4-H and served on the Hammer Township Board and the Canby Co-op Credit Union Board. When he wasn't farming or visiting family and friends, he enjoyed woodworking, collecting pennies, watching World War II documentaries, visiting museums, gardening and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Kelly and Jami Winters, both at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul; son, Timothy of Canby; brother, Marlin of Nevis; sisters, Marilyn Esping of Porter, and Janice Lund of Atwater; and godchildren, Mark Esping of Ghent, Laurie Winters of Chanhassen, Amy Larson of Louisburg and Kirk Elfering of Olivia.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
