Enlisted Sept. 13, 1858 at Boston, Mass., assigned to Troop H, 3rd U.S. Cavalry, appointed Corporal April 11, 1861. Honorably discharged Sept. 13, 1863 at expiration of term of service. Re-enlisted Sept. 23, 1863 at Carlisle, Pa. and assigned to Troop A, 5th U.S. Cavalry. Appointed Corporal Aug. 31, 1864, promoted to Sergeant April 18, 1864, appointed Color Bearer of Reserve Brigade, 1st Division Cavalry Corps, Army of the Shenandoah, Dec. 10, 1864. Wounded at Five Forks, Va. April 1, 1865 (Gun shot in right leg-horse wounded at same time), also wounded at Sailors Creek, Va. April 6, 1865, honorably discharged Sept. 23, 1868.
