Alexander was the son of Joab Center and Eunice Jenkins. He married in Hudson, NY, Elizabeth Mansfield Bay, 24 Mar 1841, Elizabeth Mansfield Bay, daughter of Thomas Bay and Harriet Keziah Mansfield. He was vice president and superintendent for the building of the Panama Railway.
