A former police chief of Hays, Joseph J. Walter, 309 East 23rd St., died Thursday at St. Anthony Hospital. He was 74. Walters spent a total of 13 years on the police force.

Born in Catherine, he was a lifetime Ellis County resident.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Church Cemetery. Rosary services will be at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Brock's North Hill Chapel. Friends may call at Brock's form 2 pm Saturday until service time.

Survivors include the widow, Mary; seven daughters, Mrs. Gilbert (Florence) Schmidt, Brookfield, Ill., Mrs. Waren (Marge) Moore, LaCrosse, Mrs. W. S. (Ruth) Harman, and Mrs. Isadore (Betty) Schmeidler, both of Hays, Mrs. H. A. (Lou) Urban, Chandler, Ariz., Mrs. R. Dale (Evelyn) Joy, Portland, Ore., Mrs. Don (Charlene) Weigel, Salina; two sons, Joseph Jr., Hutchinson, Wally, Mission, Kan.; 42 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tony, Catherine, Lawrence, Minneapolis, Minn.; a sister, Mrs. Anna Staab, Catherine.
