Sylvester was one of the early lawyers of Madison county, but gave up his practice in 1862 to join the Union army. He also served as the first mayor of Winterset, Iowa. He joined the Union Army as a Lieutenant in Company H of the 23rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He received his commission on April 27, 1861.
Sylvester was severely wounded in the Battle of Big Black River Bridge. His regiment was a part of the brigade that charged the confederate position. At some point during the charge a bullet lodged in his knee. He was sent to the hospital in Keokuk, Iowa where he died on July 5th 1863.
