Arlene M. Ahlswede, age 93, a resident of Shady Lane, Manitowoc, died Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center. The former Arlene Hougen was born October 28, 1921 in Valders, daughter of the late Henry and Alma (Kasten) Hougen. She married Herbert Ahlswede on November 28, 1942 at First Lutheran Church in Manitowoc. Herbert preceded her in death in February 21, 1986. Arlene was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Naomi Circle. She enjoyed embroidering, gardening and cooking. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.Survivors include her two children: Janet (Peter) Larsen, Manitowoc; David (Mary) Ahlswede, Manitowoc; 3 grandchildren: Daniel Riebe, Manitowoc; Steven (Tammy) Riebe, Kiel; Laura Larsen and special friend Jordon Hanlon, St. Paul, MN; 3 great-grandchildren: Alex, Eric and Sara Riebe, Kiel; one brother: Charles Hougen, Manitowoc; two sisters-in-law: Joyce Nies, Henderson, NV; Pearl Ahlswede, Manitowoc, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Herbert Ahlswede; one daughter and son-in-law: Ruth Ann (Curtis) Riebe; one brother: Kenward Hougen; one brother-in-law and one sister-in-law: William Ahlswede; Ruth Hougen.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 14, 2014 at First Lutheran Church Chapel, 521 North 8th Street, Manitowoc. The Rev. Roald Harswick will officiate. Burial will take place at Knollwood Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may call at the church chapel on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. The Jens Family Funeral Home & Crematory of Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
